"He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words."
-Elbert Hubbard, Amercian editor, publisher, and writer 1856-1915
Temptation beats at each of our doors daily. It takes different forms. In my case, compulsive spending, impulse buying, laziness and over eating are my main recognized demons. Note, I wrote RECOGNIZED demons. There are others that sneak around my life that I've yet to clue into.
Another form of temptation I recognize fighting is arguing a point. It has taken a lot for me to learn to bite my tongue. At reading that, those who know me the most would probably say "Bite her tongue? Jane? Never!" That only illustrates what a hard time I have at controlling the sharp weapon of pointed speech.
How interestingly this quote reminds us that some people, no matter how often we spread our good thoughts or God's truths, are deaf to it. How powerful silence can be for these people... who may learn more from our actions than our words. When pushed, insulted and otherwise negatively engaged by others, how about, as my wonderful sister says, "shut your pie hole," and show by example how unconditional our Christian love is.
